Anyway, I have created a new Facebook group called "Baton Rouge River City Quilt Guild". I have posted all of the pictures I still have access to and will post there from now on.

How is your UFO challenge project coming along? Mine is DONE! And it is one that absolutely qualifies for the extra challenge that Suzanne gave us, (the walk-around project). I hope everyone will bring one to the meeting. I can't wait to see them all. It is always so inspiring to see what you all have accomplished.

The Gail Garber class was quite a success. We had 19 students participate. I personally enjoyed Gail's teaching style and techniques. Her lecture on Tuesday night at Remember Me Guild was very entertaining. I love hearing quilter's stories. I f you attended any of her classes, please bring whatever work you have done so far, for show and tell.

Lotto blocks are due this month. The "Lotto Ladies", a.k.a. Sherry, Smittie, and Marchita, will collect the blocks this meeting, take them home and sort the blocks into pleasing combinations, then the winners will be drawn in June.

Due to the hanging of the UFO Challenge, Suzi, Margie and Connie,"The Challenge Ladies" will have another demo in June. Suzi's presentation about color and value gave as some tips for choosing fabrics for our quilts. Have you started work on any of the challenges yet?

Enjoy the nice weather while it lasts, See you all May 3rd.

We are finally having some sunny Springtime weather and a beautiful Easter weekend. It has been nice working outside in my garden for the last few weeks and now I am ready to get back into quilting. So many projects and ideas are going through my head.

After much consideration, I finally decided on what project to finish for the UFO challenge for next month. I hope you are all working or have already finished yours. I cannot wait till the may meeting to see all your work.

If you are still undecided or need help with the last steps to finishing your quilts, Judy Holley will give us a boost this month with a presentation on basting your quilt. Bring any projects that need help with the basting step. Also, if you have any tips or methods that work for you, please share your ideas with the group.

Suzi, Margie and Connie (or as I like to call them "The Challenge Ladies") will have another short demo for us. Margie's presentation last month was very useful. I hope she inspired you to tame your scrap stash.

Finally, The Gail Garber classes are fast approaching in April. Thank you for your participation. Your class work will make some fantastic projects and great Show & Tell.

I hope you had a Happy Easter. See you all April 5th

Where did Spring go? I was looking forward to milder temperatures to do my garden work, and instead I have had to pull weeds with temperatures in the 80's, in February! If this is now, I do not want to think what's coming in July. No time for quilting now, I better get all my gardening done now! I hope you have been able to get both your gardening and some quilting done, too.

I am such a proud mom, my son is entering High School this Fall. We have been working on his schedule for his freshman year, and let me tell you, it is a complicated endeavor. So many options, one depending on the other for it to work, and affecting decisions for the following years and into college.

That reminded me a little about deciding the borders for a quilt. So many options, pieced or plain. How many borders and how wide? To miter or not to miter the corners? Judy will keep us on our journey to finish quilts by throwing some light into quilt borders. She will talk about backings, too.

I am so excited about the challenges for this year. Suzi, Connie, and Margie, have done a great job, and will keep us inspired every month, with short programs related to the challenges. Connie will lecture on scraps and what makes a scrappy quilt. Margie will discuss Bonnie Hunter's cutting and scrap saving system. And Suzanne will have us finishing UFO's all through the year, with 3 opportunities to participate. I encourage everybody to finish at least in one UFO. Maybe you can figure out how to participate in several challenges with just one quilt (wink,wink!). I can't wait to see what you all make and where your creativity takes you.

Finally, The Gail Garber class is fast approaching in April and there are still some spots available. The closer we get to 20 participants the least the Guild will have to pitch in to cover the cost. Please contact Suzanne to register.

See you all on March 1st,

ElenaJonihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08013864207435469279noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8600573330512059525.post-82807225207336872732018-01-30T22:26:00.001-06:002018-01-30T22:27:33.477-06:00President's Message - February 2018<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Welcome Ladies,
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
What crazy weather we have had in January. I hope you could sneak in some quilting time and that you stayed warm and dry.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
Judy Holley will start our "get it finished" quilt journey with "What to do with sets of blocks." We all have extra lotto blocks or friendship blocks in our stash. If you have any quilts made with these types of blocks bring them to Show & Tell. If you have any block sets you need help figuring out how to arrange, bring those too. Judy will help with the settings.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
The Challenge Committee: Connie Ewbank, Margie Bumm, and Suzi Montague have two challenges ready to present. They will be a bit different than those in the past. I think you will be interested and engaged in the process.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
The January GSQA meeting was a successful effort. Thanks to all the guilds and their members who pitched in to help. Many thanks to Sherry for organizing everything. Did you register any quilts for the GSQA Show in April? I do not have anything ready this year, but I hope many of you did. It's a great experience and you can learn a lot from the judges' comments.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
I wanted to thank everybody that volunteered for a committee. Your contributions make the guild a better experience for all.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Finally, please keep Beth Jessup, Mary Ruth Fowler, Nina Delaune, Carol Hilton, Bebe Tulley, and Lily Willis in your prayers. Several members have suffered loss of family members and health issues.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
I'll see you all at the meeting. Let's finish a project!
ElenaJonihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08013864207435469279noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8600573330512059525.post-56074245488455114042018-01-01T11:07:00.000-06:002018-01-28T11:07:52.160-06:00President's Message-January 2018Welcome Ladies,

Be of good cheer. The last meeting of the year will be our Pot Luck Welcome Ladies,

Happy 2018 everybody! I hope all of you had a very merry Christmas, with family and friends, and are now ready to tackle the new year with renewed purpose and lots of energy. Let's make this year, the year to get things done, and when it comes to quilting, let's get those quilts finished!

If you are anything like me, you probably have lots of unfinished projects and, in my case, lot of unquilted tops. I love piecing, but when it comes to the quilting, I get stumped. After putting all that time, money, and effort into the top, I am terrified of ruining it with the quilting. The thing is, I can manage a fairly good stippling, or an overall design, but some quilts require a bit more, and there is where I freeze up. The other problem I have is time. I might figure out how I want to quilt my top, but then I have to actually do it. I don't have time so I say to myself my resolution for 2018 is to find a way to pass these hurdles, and get my quilts finished. I hope you will come on this journey with me, and in the process, become a better, more productive quilter.

To accomplish these goals, our vice-president, Judy Holley, is working on developing programs that will cover quilting tasks from basting to label making and everything in between, and she will put extra emphasis on quilting. From designing the quilting, to quilting on a home machine, to long arm etiquette, we will try to touch on as many topics as we can. Please let Judy, or any other officer, know if you have any requests for programs, or if you have any techniques or ideas you would like to share with your fellow quilters. We would like to hear from you.

I would like to thank you all for trusting me with directing our guild in 2018. I will also like to thank Judy, Suzanne, and Karen for assisting me in this endeavor. We will try to do our best to make this an exciting and entertaining year for you. But to accomplish this, we also need your help. There are many opportunities to help the guild, by signing up for a committee, providing refreshments, sharing knowledge, or sharing your work, to just name a few.

Due to the weather, we will start the January meeting at 6pm and try to keep it short and to the point, so everybody can go home early. Suzanne and Cindy will be collecting dues. We need to finalize the details for January's GSQA meeting. Sherry Herringshaw will have sign up lists and information. There are several committee openings to be filled. Judy will present the Traditions Quilt and talk about the process that brought it about. If you have show and tell, please save for the February meeting.

See you all at the meeting. Let's get it done!

Christmas Party. Please bring whatever dish you wish. There is no sign-up required. We always have a nice array of dishes: vegetables, meats, desserts, and casseroles. Bring your favorite and a serving spoon if needed.
Bring 1-yard of non-Christmas fabric for the Fabric Exchange. Chances on a raffle quilt and drawings for 6 Christmas quilt tops.

The slate of officers for 2018 will begin their tenure during this meeting. They are Elena as president, Judy as vice president, Karen as secretary, and Suzanne as treasurer. I will assume the role of past president and attend the board meetings.

Please volunteer for committees and special projects. You all have so much talent to contribute. Some will continue in their present committee roles; others need a break or wish to try something new. New Ideas are always Welcome !! Contact any of the officers with your concepts.

Once again, I want to say "thank you" for this opportunity to be your president. My tenure comes to a close as Elena takes the reins as chief executive officer. She has so many ideas and such an eye for design. I recall her original designs from the first time she joined the guild. Elena has many new thoughts and ideas for exploration of quilt techniques and challenges. And she needs to her from you.
I know you all will be open to new projects and helpful in executing the programs and committees that River City is so well known for.

The generosity of all of you and the South Louisiana quilt community has brought tears to my eyes at times and many blessings to my door, more than I ever imagined. You have my many thanks. I know these friendships we have forged will last a lifetime.

Please continue to contact me for Quilts of Valor presentations.

Remember - one last Saturday Sew Day on December 9th.
When I first considered retirement from the US Post Office and opening my shop full-time, I thought, "Sure - I'll have plenty of time to quilt." Well, experience has proved to be a bit of a different outcome than what I thought. However, being a part of the generous Baton Rouge quilt community has brought many blessings to me, more than I every imagined. You all have my love and my thanks for your support throughout the years.

We are very excited to have Kelli Thompson lecture and present her trunk show about a machine quilting technique called - ZENTANGLES. Fyi, Kelli is the sister of guild member, Karen Velupillai. There is a lot of talent in that family. Kelli's class is Sat., Oct. 7th. Space available.

Thanks to Joni for the Debbie Ingram Trunk Show last month. Debbie was a very prolific quilter and had made so many tops that there were enough for a very delightful show of her work.

Joni and her gang of quilter friends made the sale of Debbie's fabrics and notions a great success last Saturday. Stan and the Ingram Family are so very grateful that these items that Debbie loved are now shared with her friends and fellow quilters. There is still enough stash left for another sale in the future. Thank you for your patronage and assistance to the Ingram Family.
Please, Volunteer as a chairperson or committee member to lead the guild in 2018 and make it prosper. It is exciting and personally rewarding to facilitate the quilting experience that we all share. Bring some ideas to the table.

Please support the Fall Arts Festival on October 21st. Our friends at Remember Me guild have made this event very popular. Everything takes place here at church.
The Houston International Quilt Show is 3 weeks away. Folks are getting really excited.
Classes begin Oct. 30th and Preview Night is Nov. 1st. We will meet in November after the Houston show.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We will have a guest speaker, Kelli Thompson, with a truck show and who will lecture about the "Zentangles" method of free-style quilting. It is very liberating in the method of marking quilt tops for machine quilting. She will teach a class on the following Saturday, Sept. 9th.

And the Winner of the 2017 "Selfie" Round Robin Challenge is....(drum roll please).... Elena Acosta !! Not to deflate her win and her lovely wall hanging, however Elena's entry was the only one presented. Low participation rate sometimes occurs when a similar challenge runs two years in a row. It happens. So next year's officers need to put together a new challenge with mass appeal. Any suggestions?

Thanks to Peggy Bourgeois and Sharon Holder for their informative and amusing demonstration on First Aid For Quilters last month. They are among our guild's many health care professionals, both retired and actively working, who can advise us to be very aware of our "quilter" health.

The 2017 Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler Shop Hop was a success. Bring your best finds for Show & Tell. Do you have any suggestions on how to improve the Shop Hop experience??

This time, we dodged the bullet with Harvey. Its presence in the Gulf caused anxiety among all of us. The effects of the August Rains of 2016 are still too fresh in our psyches. However, not to be deterred, some of you are restarting humanitarian aid for flood victims in Texas and Southwest Louisiana. Loretta Webre has begun a pillow/pillowcase campaign and is collecting monies for pillows and postage. We will hear about many more.

The Houston International Quilt Show is still "a go." Emails were sent out from the main office of Quilts, Inc. that the quilts were safe and the show would go on as scheduled. Classes begin Oct. 30th and Preview Night is Nov. 1st. Remember LA Quilters surprised IQS when we showed up in record numbers after Katrina in 2005.

Remember to turn in your Christmas Lotto Blocks and your (Lucky Stars) Lotto Blocks. We draw a Lucky Star winner at this Sept. meeting. Christmas lotto quilts are won at the Christmas Party.

Just a reminder.... We will appoint a nominating committee to select the next slate of guild officers. Volunteer as an officer or chairperson to lead the guild in 2018. It is exciting and very rewarding to facilitate the quilting experience that we all share. Bring some ideas to the table.

SEW, dear ones, be inspired, as I am by your creativity and drive,

It's time to let your creativity shine with the exhibit of the "Selfie" Round Robin Challenge. Your works are always such interesting interpretations of the challenge directions. We vote for Viewer's Choice and award cash prizes - 1st, 2nd , and 3rd.

Also this month, there will be a short demonstration on First Aid For Quilters with Peggy Bourgeois and Sharon Holder.

Remember to turn in your Christmas Lotto Blocks and your (Lucky Stars) Lotto Blocks. You can get extra chances when you turn in your blocks early.

The 2017 Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler Shop Hop has been quite successful through its first weekend with the 2nd weekend coming up now. Let's hope the weather will cooperate.

Our "Christmas in July" soiree was a big hit. The food and the company was delightful.

We take a moment to pause and remember the chaos of one year ago this week. The effects of the August Rains of 2016 seemed unending. One year has gone by with most of us back in our homes and back to our lives. Some scars still remain. The goodness of others helped to mend homes and hearts. The Bridge Over Troubled Water quilting drive brought out the very best in all of us and blessings all around.

At the Louisiana Arts & Sciences Museum on River Road (the old train station) there is an exhibit, "Faces of the Flood" on display until September 3rd. A collection of photos from professional and amateur photographers and social media, rendered into a montage of emotion.

Just a reminder.... This is the last leg of my second term as guild president. It has been a very rewarding time for me. In the next few months, we will appoint a nominating committee and chairman to select the next slate of officers. It is time for members to step up and volunteer to lead the guild in 2018. Please give that idea some consideration. It is exciting and very rewarding to facilitate the quilting experience that we all share. Bring something to the table and serve as an officer.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This meeting we will have Candy Bergeron present her lecture on Broderie Perse. She will have beautiful quilts and samples to view. If you have quilted items using this technique, please bring them to Show & Tell.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Not to steal Candy's thunder, but in French "broderie perse" means Persian embroidery, but it also refers to the lovely technique of appliquing printed chintz flowers and other motifs onto another fabric. These exquisite quilts have been made since the 1700s.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Historically, chintz fabrics were prevalent in the port city of New Orleans in the early 1800's.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">At the 2016 Houston Quilt Show, there was an example of BRODERIE PERSE quilting on display in the exhibit hall that dated back to 1850. The chintz fabrics (called polished cotton when I was a child) were as beautiful and brilliant as the day it was quilted. It was expertly preserved and continues to be a stunning textile 167 years later.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Also at this June meeting, the first of 5 designs for Christmas Lotto Blocks will be ready for purchase. Next month, in July, we will celebrate "Christmas in July" with a pot-luck supper and other special details.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Just a reminder, along with crawfish season and football season, June 1st marks the beginning of Hurricane Season. Just be apprised that the guild works on the "Prudent Woman" contingency plan. If there is bad weather, whether rain or snow on meeting night, act as your own steward for your own safety. If it is perilous for you to travel that evening, then stay home. We all have our limitations. If we can send out an email quickly enough, then a message will be sent to you as soon as possible.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Hurricane fun fact - Walmart sells the most Pop-Tarts during a storm event.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Thanks to Elena for last month's demonstration on how cutting machines work and how it can be applied to quilting and crafting. Some models scan and cut original designs.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Thanks to our refreshment ladies for this month.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
Lori Steib, this year's president of Modern Quilt and vice president of
Remember Me has hatched an ambitious plan to promote interest and to expand the
activities of our local quilt community. By providing a sewing
opportunity that integrates differing quilt tastes and interests in group
events, she hopes to make sew days a fellowship that is a fulfilling
quilting experience and better attended by combining memberships. There
will be more quilters with greater interaction with ideas and advice.

So much has happened since last we spoke:

The Remember Me Fall Arts Jubilee was a big success.

The Selfish Round Robin had wonderful participation and stunning winners.

Paula Toups provided pillows and pillowcases for those members affected by flood. (We thank you.)

The Houston Market/Quilt Show was just spectacular.

Judy Momenzadah won a Ribbon (Honorable Mention) in the digital imagery for Pirates' Alley and had a second entry, St. Gabriel. Congratulations on Judy on her win.

Connie Ewbank had her booth open with patterns to sell.

The UPS trucks will be arriving soon with new fabric orders to see and quilt.

Local quilter, Lynne Reamy had an entry in the Lion King exhibit.

The 20 foot alligator quilt (saltwater crocodile according to its maker, Susan Carlson of Maine.) was the talk of the show. She spent several years creating this marvel of piecing and applique techniques. You can see a time-lapse video of its evolution on You-Tube.

Now, Let's see your glorious finds from Houston. Did you see any interesting classes for the future??

There was an example of BRODERIE PERSE quilting on display in the exhibit that dated back to 1850. The chintz fabrics (called polished cotton when I was a child) were as beautiful and brilliant as the day it was quilted. It was expertly preserved and continues to be a stunning textile 166 years later.

We are in luck, Candy Bergeron will demonstrate these techniques for our program this month.

On a sad note, quilter and embroiderer, Janet Stevens, died suddenly last week. Our condolences to her family and friends. She was a member of River City and Remember Me guilds.

There will be Quilts of Valor presentations at the November meeting. Bring tissues.

Our Christmas Party plans are made. Bring 5 inch squares, wear fancy sweaters, and eat Pot Luck Dinner (just bring whatever you like, no sign-up list this time) and it is just 2 weeks until Thanksgiving. Time flies when you are having fun.

SEW, dear ones, be inspired, as I am by your creativity and drive,
……LIVE, LOVE, LAUGH, AND MOST OF ALL, QUILT.
